Dear Michael, Jon, Yvonne, Otto, Muki, Yoko, Edward and everyone:
Time is getting short. It is difficult producing this on while on "Vacation" here on Maui. I have not yet received response from Yvonne at Global SchoolNet about their reflector IP# or confirmation from KidCast#4 CU-SeeMe refelctor coordinator, JON FOX, about the IP#s of reflectors for
A) ISDN or HIGHER
B) 28.8
C) 14.4 - whatever LURKERS ONLY
Is this too complicated? PLEASE ADVISE!
We already have the Mediacast Reflector and SIRIUS Communitcations Reflector numbers. Go to KidCast Central at Creativity Cafe and click on the CU-SeeMe button for details. They will not be turned on until the day of the broadcast....unless there is confirmation we can test CU-SeeMe on Thursday 11am (HDT).
I Would like to test CU-SeeMe this Thursday at 11am Hawaii time.
The KidCast on Maui is being sponsored in part by Maui Community College. They are providing the computer access for pre production and production on Earthday and will host the children participating here on Maui (where I will be until April 28).
This is a gread experiment and I commend you all on participating in this year's Earthday KidCast For Peace! Good Luck Everyone. I am trying to keep up the email Thread by hand at: Creativity.net/kcmsgs.html. MajorDomo would be helpful if anyone can set up a KidCast listserver.
Aloha,

re : network re web re expansions re possilities re artists re peace re kidcast, i tried to reach Lee at what i believe is his http number but have not got the response. he is either busy or does not get the messages.
'next section' which i wrote to you a few days ago ~but, ~ of course, that was also ten years ago in more senses than one. ( i transform so fast now , do you also ? )
next section. underlined.
i am not sure you will get this e-mail but believe. you might. anyway, if you are on line, check www.shop-hawaii.com It only recently opened ( Feb.15,1997 )
i bet you will be interested in the shop-hawai'i mall and in some of its builders; in one way or another. You'll find there many nice things, for example nice pictures of Pahoa ( that's were Pahoa Lounge is. music bar. Larry Dupio plays there on thursday nights ) and more. ...........and on top of that, one of the founders is a good friend of ours, Lee, who is married to Susan and they live in Mountain View 1/2 h from us and they have a great dog . Besides being a partner in that enterprise, Lee is also very sincerely interested in teen agers and kids. Plays music together with a few of them etc... He is a little older than you ( so are Keith and myself too , might make the links of prebaby boomers to baby boomers interesting ). Lee is a very inspired musician and artist at that. We all are in pulses and bands so if that ends up being possible, it would be neat if all of us had a chance to connect. There is a good chance i won't going to Kona until April 24 so if you can set a gig for Kidcasts on the island, don't worry about accommodations. Otherwise, we may meet before or sometime later. Stay in touch and hang loose and welcomed in Hawai'i. N
p.s. re : Kidcast ; you might check with Lee - Medeiros - either by e-mail ( may possibly be the web master of Shop Hawaii Mall/ . Lee is a cool cat. Susan is neat too. i enjoy him a lot. He may not have the equipment necessary yet but i believe he has a good relation with our common server ilhawaii. net. and, I am sure, will be turned on by much of your work on the web. say hi if you decide to contact him. In the meantime, I can't wait for the global music to swell. ;-)

There is no ISDN service anywhere in Maui County at this time. ISDN service is scheduled to be introduced on Lanai in May and other locations throughout the County throughout the year.

There are a few ways to get a fast connection in Maui County at this time: Switch 56, Frame Relay and Fractional T-1... Service is available from GTE and from GST...

Subject: April 6 CountUP to Peace Activities

Dear Peter:

Just looked at the 1000 Day CountUP to Peace Website which is loaded with events and activities that you can connect to the Kid-Cast for Peace on April 22nd.

Among them are:

MILLENNIUM MAIL ART PROJECT. Boston 2000 is sponsoring a program that can empower everyone to help create peace through creativity. Create a drawing, poem or story about peace on earth. Make 10 to 30 copies. Choose names at random from your local phone book, and send each a copy of your creative effort in a RED ENVELOPE. Get other people involved to do the same thing. Let the media know that hundreds of people in your community will receive a special red envelope in the mail. This program can be set up in every community and it can also continue throughout the 1000 Day CountUP to Peace. For information about Boston 2000's program contact: Patrice Keegan, Steal This Idea, Inc., 111 Franklin Street, Allston, MA 02134. Email- pkeegan@uh-ras1.bu.edu; webpage: www.codman.org/boston2000/page5.html

IDEAS FOR PEACE CONTEST. The Millennium Institute is sponsoring a contest in which people can submit ideas about how our communities, governments, corporations and universities can use the 1000 Day CountUP as an opportunity to "prepare for a future that can be sustained in the face of declining natural resources." The 100 best ideas will be awarded certificates. The best set of ideas will receive $1000 prize. Ideas should be submitted to: Millennium Institute, 1117 N. 19th Street, Arlington, VA 22209-1708 U.S.A., e-mail: millennium@igc.apc.org webpage: www.igc.apc.o rg/millennium

CHILDREN'S 1000 DAYS TO THE MILLENNIUM CELEBRATION sponsored by World Peace 2000 will take place at Stoke Park, Guildford, Surrey England from 2pm-5pm. Everyone is invited. Several schools and local choirs will take part in a sing-a-long of peace songs; a Peace Star will be inaugurated; there will be various Peace stands and entertainments for children. Children Hold Court in Cyberspace to Share Visions of Peace on Earthday

Participate in "KidCast For Peace; Solutions for a Better World," a Creativity Cafe Cybercast on Earthday, April 22, 1997. History and participation details can be found in KidCast Central: http://creativity.net/kidcast2.html.

Children in schools, cybercafes, and at home are invited to prepare artwork describing their thoughts and feelings on how we might make this a happier, healthier, safer and more peaceful world? The KidCast will link participants via CU-SeeMe video conferencing software and the VRML "EarthStation" currently circling cyberspace. For further information, contact: Visionary Artists Resources Including Other Unique Services (V.A.R.I.O.U.S.); 2263 Sacramento St., San Francisco, CA 94115, (415)776-0821, email: various@creativity.net, or visit Creativity Cafe: http://creativity.net.

Also, Can you be in touch with Jon Fox at Mediacast and Otto at Sirius Communications to set up the reflector network? We will have about 6 (as it stands now) origination sources. I expect we will have more points of origin as the broadcast day approaches. I would like to have an ISDN or better reflector to have password protection for high-end content providers, and perhaps another reflector set up for 28.8, also with a project code (password).

As of today 3/27/97 we have the following ISDN or better participants. (Please advise of incorrectness...additions and deletions):

WoW Mendi...
Thanks for such an enthusiastic response. There is magic afloat here.... I just got back from celebrating my 50th Birthday with my LA friends (hence my delay in getting back to you) which is actually on 4-11. I consider myself an 11 vibration bringing that energy into all my work. The vision that drives me of the artists resource center was conceived a sleepless night on JULY ELEVENTH 1980. The vision had a birthday on JULY ELEVENTH 1991. Eleven years exactly from the night of the magnanomous vision that would change my life.

I found myself on Maui, my new home with old and new friends celebrating the total SOLAR ECLIPSE on 7-11-91. I had burned out several times over the years in following that inner call to bring to fruition a community resource center, what I now call Creativity Cafe(R), as a reflection of my hearts passion and desire to assist in planetary healing.

On that day in 1991, I said to myself, "Peter, even though you swore you would not produce any more showcases and physicalizations of your vision having burned out too many times. And, that you came to Maui to heal your body and
soul...the fact that this great celestial event marks the 11th anniversary to the day EXACTLY of your vision, cannot go unnoticed. It is a sign from God that you were born to bring this center for facilitating the expression of the most inspired and visionary creative souls to fruition. A place to produce positive media for global consumption in mass media, designed to heal mass mind... Ok, I'll do it!" I said, as I looked up to the heavens. The to to seal the deal. Somehow into my experience was turust a Navy astronomical epheremis that said totality lasted on the neighboring Island of HAWAII, four minutes and eleven seconds (4-11) exactly...MY BIRTHDAY! There are higher forces at work here folks!

Yes, I am an eleven. Now, just before my birthday, I get your message mentioning my actual birthday as your publication date. Like a cigarette is guaranteed another coffin nail, your message brings a breath of life as a testimonial to god's great plan for me!

Yes, kindred spirits are we, joining those uniting all over the world. Exciting isn't it? Welcome aboard our journey in unfolding the global theater of the future.

Here is a possible starting point for your article:
Creativity Cafe is a bridge between physical ( "V.A.R.I.O.U.S. Media Ink" Living Gallery Events; http://creativity.net/vmi.html) and cyberspace ("KidCast For Peace; Solutions For A Better World"; http://creativity.net/kidcast2.html). They provide and produce creativity enhancement/networking opportunities designed to instigate audience interaction, enjoyment of the creative process and appreciation of ones' Self. They exist in Cyberspace and touch down frequently in Physical Space on their way to a network of permanent Artists Resource and Community synergy Centers designed to faciliate creative expression and help build a better world.

So Mendi, I hope it's not too late to get into your magazine? That would be the best present. In my travels I met the President of Earth Day International, Dr. Gary Herbertson who immediately circulated our "KidCast For Peace; Solutions For A Better World" Press Release, to the Interfaith Council for the United Nations Network; a group coordinating global Earthday activities. Excitement is building!

I await your acknowledgement of this and hope by now you have visited KidCast Central, understand the participation instructions and perhaps have helped to organize school groups and cybercafes to participate in your area?

Great to be in touch with you!
Aloha,
-Peter-

Everything is going well. I turned over alot of the quotes and press related material to a magazine in Orlando that we work with. They are doing write ups and building support. According to Mindi (the editor) this coincides with alot of contacts she has that are already doing various things for Earthday. I believe she will pull together some nice things. If I get ahold of an issue I'll send it your way.

It's a waiting game right now. We are going to concentrate on Orlando so that we don't overwhelm ourselves. We are going to take in 50-75 pieces of art. With an undetermined amount of literature. Our deadline to have everything submitted to us is March 27th. That will give us the time to put together the pages and make them to par for the purpose. Linda is our contact for the school ... it is a small school of only 9 classrooms and about 270 students that range in grade from 8-13 (i believe). The Art Directors have monthly projects and this is it for the month of March.

Our site in general is averaging about 2000 hits per day and the kidcast logo and a link is being displayed in prominent locations. It's not much, but I'm sure it helps.

The only thing that I am a little shakey about is the CUSEEME stuff. I am unfamiliar with it, and don't know if my organizational abilities are going to span the 1300 miles between me and Orlando to get it together. We do have a person available that is doing live broadcasts from a club down there. He owns some server equipment and has expressed interest in participating as well. I do not know him directly though and am not sure of how reliable he will prove to be ... that seems to be the only ify part. If you have any additional info on the particulars of the broadcasting I would appreciate them. Everything seems to be ontarget and well underway. It's amazing how easily it has taken off. All I can do now is sit back and hope for the best! Peace

Greetings Peter,
Unfortunately, I cannot recommend a school with ISDN or T-1 access on Maui.
Since this is CU-SeeMe on the internet, is T-1 or ISDN really needed? (I
thought CU-See-Me only required a 28.8 modem) If you can get by with a 28.8
modem, you may find more schools have access to this technology.
As far as finding a school, you may want to contact the Kamehameha schools
at 808-842-8211. I believe they have a school in Lahaina. For the public
school system, you may want to contact the Department of Education's Office
of Telecom Services, Visual Technology Services branch at 808-832-5640 or
the Distance Learning Technology branch at 808-733-4777.
Feel free to call me at 800-800-6338 to discuss further.

Children Globally Tell the Adults What to do in Earthday CyberCast
Dear Gary, I have been trying to find someone on Maui to cooperate in a CU-SeeMe video cast on the Internet for Earthday to facilitate the expression of Children Sharing their visions of peace. Are you able to suggest a school or other group with at least ISDN access who might like to participate? Details of the event can be found at the following URL: http://creativity.net/kcmaui4pr-1.html . It's called "KidCast For Peace; Solutions For A Better World".
Actually anywhere with a T-1 would be great if they wouldn't mind being the center of the cybercast? I will hopefully (If a CU-SeeMe capable facility pops up) be hosting from Maui where I'll be celebrationg my 50th D-Day. Can you be of assistance? Mahalo for your response. Of course you are also welcome to participate!
KidCast Central has the details: http://creativity.net/kidcast2.html

Fine! Ending earlier is actually better for writers. Here is the gig...
Put together a KidCast For Peace web site. Ideally we would like a statement, story, poem of no more than 4 paragraphs with a picture of the writer and his/her age. Topics and instructions can be found at KidCast Central. Make sure you are linked back to KidCast Central from the page you create. We will link to your KidCast for Peace page (after you send us the URL). We will also put it up on the VRML EarthStation carrying the other submissions. Whaddya think, Can you play?

It is never too late to participate in the KidCast. The creation of peace/ecology related expression that is then formatted onto KidCast For Peace web sites, is an onging process.
The URLs can be sent to Creativity Cafe at any time for posting to KidCAst Central and the EarthSatation. In fact, the CU-SeeMe gatherings of children can take place any time we choose to organize/plan it.

Thanks for thinking us.
GSN would be happy to participate in this event. I think we can help in a
number of ways.
- "showcase" the event on our CU-SeeMe Schools site (www.gsn.org/gsn/cu)
- send an announcement out to our electronic mailing list
- provide students to interact via CU-SeeMe on the event day
- provide a robust reflector for use on that day
In return, we would request that:
1) the logo be displayed on the KidsCast web site with a hotlink back to
www.gsn.org
2) you mention Global SchoolNet to the media if the opportunity presents
itself :-)
What elese did you have in mind???

Hi Darrow,
Thanks for your offer of support and participation. I personally will not
have art ready for you. The idea is for you (or those you empower) to come
up with art for mounting on your server. Then send us the URL for linking
to the EarthStation and KidCast Central. This should ideally be finished
before the day of the actual CU-SeeMe KidCast (4/22). It would be great if
you might host a gathering of the people whose art is on the KidCast For
Peace web sites you create. With ISDN or better access, your group could
then be part of the CU-SeeMe sharing on Earthday. They could hold up the
art they have created, and refer others to their web pages while they see
and speak with other participants around the world.
Since Macromedia is one of our supporters and maker of great storytelling
tools, I would like to get their user base involved. Any ideas?
If you look at our KidCAst site, you will see the perfect page created by
children of Croatia.
Hope that helps. We will keep you in the loop.
Peace,
-Peter-
